Mind Goldcar – the hire firm that sells cover customers don't want - The Guardian
JJ-K from London booked a rate car through the website Rentalcars. “A week was £139. 91 and included collision damage waiver, third-reception liability and theft protection. However, when I went to collect the car at the airport, the Spanish rental company, Goldcar, told me that this was a ringfenced put away and that I would have to pay £206 for the hire. The agent gave me an invoice in Spanish. Assuming the total included the deposit, I signed. “I discovered that the primary £139. 91 had not been ringfenced so the total hire charge was £346. 32. I called both companies who said that, since I had signed the undertake, there was nothing to be done. It turned out that Goldcar had charged me an extra fee for a premium insurance policy, which was not mentioned by the Goldcar factor. “I am an experienced traveller and have an annual insurance waiver and always refuse ‘supercover’ (or whatever the hire company popularity their excess). “The Goldcar agent in Marseille. did not even try to sell me cover as I showed him my annual waiver policy. He said my importance as a regular Goldcar hirer meant he did not need a deposit. “He mentioned the fuel deposit and asked me to symbol an electronic pad. When he printed the contract he covered the charges section with a map. He then folded the contract and, just as he passed it to me, thrust a innocent sheet of paper at me and said I needed to sign. “I have no idea what the paper actually said. Only later did I come that €74 had been debited from my account to pay for ‘supercover’ insurance. Goldcar has fobbed me off by saying I got benefit from the ‘supercover’ even though I did not ask for it and they will guard their staff better. CB of London used Goldcar on a 12-day trip to Italy. “We had paid for a car through Feast Autos and I took out extra insurance with insurance4carhire. We were asked to produce the credit card we had hand-me-down on collection of the car. “The Goldcar agent never mentioned any extra insurance. However, when we received our credit card communication we found an extra £207. 46, including Super Relax Cover. RM of Cambridge also found himself paying £60. 78 for Super Loosen Cover when he hired a Goldcar vehicle in Bologna. Source: www.theguardian.com
Ordinary UK car insurance bill rose by 13% over past year - The Guardian
Mean car insurance bills have jumped by more than 13% over the past year following a surge in costly claims, according to new data. The bad information for drivers is that an imminent hike in the tax on insurance is likely to add a few more pounds to the cost of a policy. Consumer Intelligence, a customer base research agency specialising in insurance and banking, said the average UK motor premium stood at £788, which represented a bonus rise of 13. 5% in the year to August. However, drivers in north-west England and London are paying up to 50% more than the subject average. The average bill for a motorist in north-west England is £1,177 following a 17. 3% leap over 12 months, while in London it has risen 16. 7% to £1,068. One of the biggest UK insurers LV= suggested prices were set to go up further this year. Consumer Intelligence – whose figures are used by the government’s Office for National Statistics to add up official inflation statistics – said there were “huge differences” across the country and between age groups. It compared the prices offered to 3,600 people by all the noteworthy price comparison sites and leading direct insurers. Younger drivers are paying the highest bills: the usual premium for an under-25 is £1,831, although prices for this age group are rising at a slightly slower rate. Older drivers are experiencing higher rises – typically up 15. 3% over the year – but their generally annual bill, as calculated by averaging out the five cheapest premiums, is much lower at £348. Consumer Findings’s data shows that the cheapest place to insure a car is Scotland, where the average premium is £562. On 1 October, the paradigm rate of insurance premium tax will rise from 9. 5% to 10% – a change announced in the March 2016 budget to lift flood defences and inject cash into the most hard-hit regions. The government said that if insurers passed the expenditure of this increase on to their customers, the average motor insurance premium would rise by £2 per year. Ian Hughes, chief leadership of Consumer Intelligence, said: “The latest increase in insurance premium tax which takes effect next month, as in good shape as rising claims, are driving the rise in premiums.
